GCSE: Earth & Beyond

Sun | Mercury | Venus | Earth | Moon | Mars | Asteroids | Jupiter | Saturn | Uranus | Neptune | Pluto | Kuiper

At GCSE level (ages 14-16), you are required to know about the Universe in which we live. Under the title Earth & Beyond, you should have learned about the solar system, gravity, stars and some detail about the large-scale structure of the Universe. We recommend GCSE.com for GCSE revision.

The links below are intended to guide you when either learning this for the first time, or for revision purposes:

The Solar System

Jupiter and MoonsYou should know:
  • the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, Sun, planets and other bodies in the solar system. [link]
  • that the attractive force of gravity determines the movements of the planets, moons, comets, etc. [link]
  • that the sun is a star. [link]

    Stars

    Pleiades star clusterYou should know:
  • that the Sun is a star. [link]
  • how stars release energy by nuclear fusion. [link]
  • how stars change over their lifetime. [link]
  • that stars are born, they live, then die. [link]

  • The Evolving Universe

Radio TelescopeYou should know (more links soon)
  • that the sun is a star among billions in a group called the Milky Way Galaxy. [link]
  • that there are billions of galaxies in the Universe, some bigger, some smaller, than our own.
  • that all galaxies are moving apart, implying a beginning - Big Bang [link]
